The CAN BE Innovation Center is thrilled to celebrate Powder & Ink Permanent Cosmetics and Tattoo Studio’s one-year anniversary! Powder & Ink is a woman-owned company that specializes in permanent cosmetics and tattoos. We had the opportunity to chat with Roxie Rose, the passionate owner of the business, where she shared insights on her journey.
For those who may not be familiar with you, tell us about who you are and your business’s story.
“My name is Roxie, and I am the owner of Powder & Ink Permanent Cosmetics and Tattoo Studio. Five years ago, I pursued my passion for art and beauty by starting this business. My background in the medical field has equipped me with the skills necessary for the procedures I perform today. I strive to help others regain their confidence through cosmetic and paramedical tattooing.”
Looking back on the past year, and based on your previous answer, has your business’s journey matched your initial vision?
“Over the past year, my business has aligned with my initial vision, and I am now proud to be a Master Artist in cosmetic tattooing. Each day, I have the privilege of helping clients on their journeys, whether it’s through nipple reconstruction, permanent brows, scar camouflage, lip scar cover-up or blush, eyeliner, freckles, or beauty marks. Collaborating with CAN BE has been instrumental in my growth, providing invaluable support in networking and marketing. I feel confident facing any challenges ahead, knowing I have a strong support system behind me.”
One year into your business, what accomplishments or milestones are you most proud of achieving?
“I take great pride in the expansion of my clientele since joining the CAN BE community. This experience has not only allowed me to form valuable connections but has also significantly increased my earnings for the fiscal year. Additionally, I am incredibly proud of my apprentice, Alyssa. She has grown into an exceptional artist and is soon set to graduate to work independently.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced during your first year, can you share a pivotal moment that tested your resilience and determination as a business owner? How did you overcome it?
“At the beginning of the year, I lost my health insurance and faced personal health challenges that set me back financially, preventing me from working for about a month. Fortunately, through the ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by CAN BE for my business, I unintentionally connected with individuals who helped me resolve my insurance issues. The ribbon-cutting ceremony also helped me gain new clientele, allowing me to get back on my feet as I started to feel better.”
In what ways has the local business community or the community at large supported your venture over the past year? Any specific examples or instances that stood out?
“The community supported my business through promotions at other local establishments and word of mouth. Additionally, we actively participated in community service, including volunteering for the Suicide Prevention event at Hazleton Area High School.”
What has your experience in the Innovation Center been like? What are some of your favorite things about being a part of CAN BE?
“My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I appreciate the privacy, cleanliness, and security that the building offers. The constant support from CAN BE and their reliability are invaluable. I also cherish the connections with other small businesses in the building and the opportunities for collaboration.”
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the second year of your business? Are there new products, services, or initiatives on the horizon?
“Our goals include offering insurance-covered areola reconstruction services for breast cancer survivors and the transgender community. We also aim to provide educational services for aspiring permanent makeup and tattoo artists. Additionally, we are considering expansion and launching a podcast.”
On a personal note, what have been the most rewarding aspects of being a business owner, and what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs based on your experiences?
“I appreciate the professional freedom and independence in how I manage my schedule and run my business. The networking and collaboration opportunities I encounter enrich my experiences. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is this: if it feels scary, you’re likely on the right path. Follow your passion and embrace what others might call 'delusional.' No dream has ever become a reality without a bit of that mindset.”
To end this discussion on a fun note, if you could invent a holiday, what would it be, and how would people celebrate it?
“My ideal holiday would be a blend of Valentine’s Day and Halloween, which I’d call 'Valoween.' In my studio, I’d create an atmosphere that’s pink, pretty, and a bit spooky. I love this concept because Halloween allows everyone to be whoever they want without judgment, while Valentine’s Day celebrates love and connection. Together, they form the perfect combination of creativity and compassion.”
